Investors evaluating Tanzania often start with the same question: what actually needs to happen before you can legally open your doors? Here's the short version, based on what we walk clients through every week.

1. Choose the Right Jurisdiction First

Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar are governed by different registration authorities. Trading, manufacturing, and professional services businesses typically register on the Mainland through BRELA. Tourism, export-focused, and certain strategic investments are often better suited to Zanzibar. Getting this decision right before you file avoids a costly restructure later.

2. Registration Is the Foundation, Not the Finish Line

A BRELA certificate means your company legally exists — it doesn't mean you're ready to trade. Most businesses also need:

  • TIN registration and VAT registration with TRA
  • NSSF employer registration before hiring anyone
  • Sector-specific licences (construction, hospitality, mining, and manufacturing all carry their own requirements)
  • A registered office address to receive official correspondence

3. Tax Registration Timing Matters

Registering for VAT too early or too late both create problems — too early and you carry compliance overhead before you have revenue; too late and you risk penalties on the revenue you should have declared. We help clients time this against their actual trading start date.

4. Payroll Compliance Starts With Your First Hire

NSSF, WCF, and PAYE obligations begin the moment you employ someone in Tanzania, foreign or local. Setting up payroll correctly from day one is far cheaper than correcting it after a labour or tax audit.

5. Compliance Is Ongoing, Not a One-Time Event

Annual returns, licence renewals, and tax filings continue for the life of the business. The businesses that stay out of trouble are the ones that treat compliance as a calendar, not a crisis.
